Toray Lumirror F71 PET Film: TDS Explained for Metallic Yarn and Photoresist Uses

A Plain-English Reading of the Toray Lumirror F71 PET Film Datasheet: A Glossy, Transparent Polyester Film at 12 and 19 Micron

This guide explains the Toray Lumirror F71 PET Film technical data sheet (TDS) in plain English, so buyers and engineers can read the figures with confidence.

What Is Toray Lumirror F71 PET Film?

Toray Lumirror F71 PET Film is a glossy, transparent polyester (PET) film from Toray’s Lumirror range. According to its datasheet, it is transparent but has slight roughness for good handling properties. It is offered in two thin grades, 12 and 19 um, and the datasheet lists metallic yarn and dry film photoresist as its applications.

Lumirror F71 at a Glance

  • Type: glossy and transparent polyester film with slight roughness
  • Available thickness: 12 and 19 um
  • Listed properties: transparent, glossy, high Young’s modulus to keep TD flatness (regarding DFR), slight roughness for good handling
  • Listed applications: metallic yarn (12 um) and dry film photoresist (19 um)

Key Properties from the Datasheet

Values below are shown as 12 um / 19 um. MD is the machine direction (the running direction of the film) and TD is the transverse direction.

  • Tensile strength, MD: 285 / 300 MPa. TD: 240 / 265 MPa (ASTM D882)
  • Elongation at break, MD: 125 / 140 percent. TD: 150 / 160 percent (ASTM D882)
  • Thermal shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes, MD: 1.5 / 1.6 percent. TD: 0.0 / 0.4 percent (ASTM D1204)
  • Thermal shrinkage at 190°C for 20 minutes, MD: 2.6 / 4.0 percent. TD: 0.0 / 1.0 percent (ASTM D1204)
  • Haze: 1.5 / 1.8 percent (ASTM D1003)
  • Coefficient of friction, static: 0.6 / 0.6. Dynamic: 0.5 / 0.5 (ASTM D1894)

What the Numbers Mean

Clarity and gloss. Haze measures how much of the light passing through the film is scattered. A lower number means a clearer film. The datasheet lists 1.5 and 1.8 percent, which is low, and it describes the film as transparent and glossy. At the same time the film keeps a slight roughness, which is the reason for the small amount of haze.

Slight roughness and friction. A very smooth thin film tends to stick to itself and is hard to wind, so a slight roughness is added for good handling (a general explanation, not from this datasheet). The coefficient of friction describes how easily film surfaces slide over each other. The datasheet lists about 0.6 static and 0.5 dynamic for both grades.

Strength and stiffness. Tensile strength shows how much pulling force the film withstands before it breaks. At 285 to 300 MPa in MD and 240 to 265 MPa in TD, this is a strong film for its thickness. The datasheet also says the film has a high Young’s modulus, which means it is stiff, and that this helps keep it flat in the TD direction for dry film photoresist use. Note that the datasheet does not list a numerical modulus value.

Stretch. Elongation at break shows how far the film stretches before it breaks. MD is 125 to 140 percent and TD is 150 to 160 percent.

Heat stability. The datasheet gives shrinkage at two conditions. At 150°C for 30 minutes, MD shrinkage is 1.5 to 1.6 percent and TD shrinkage is 0.0 to 0.4 percent. At the harsher 190°C for 20 minutes, MD shrinkage rises to 2.6 percent for 12 um and 4.0 percent for 19 um, while TD is 0.0 and 1.0 percent. Lower shrinkage means better dimensional stability, which matters in coating, drying, and other heat steps. MD shrinkage is higher than TD for both grades.

Typical Applications: Metallic Yarn and Dry Film Photoresist

The datasheet lists metallic yarn for the 12 um grade and dry film photoresist (DFR) for the 19 um grade. In general, metallic yarn is thread made from thin metallized film and is used in textiles and decoration, while dry film photoresist is a layered material used in making printed circuit boards, where a thin, clear, flat carrier film is needed (general explanations, not from this datasheet). The datasheet does not describe the exact role of the film in either product, so confirm suitability with your own process and test samples.

How to Read the Two Grades

  • 12 um is the thinner grade and the one the datasheet links to metallic yarn.
  • 19 um is the grade the datasheet links to dry film photoresist, and it shows slightly higher strength and elongation.
  • At 190°C the 19 um grade shrinks more than the 12 um grade, so check this line if your process runs at high temperature.
  • Compare grades of the same thickness only, since the values change from grade to grade.

Points to Keep in Mind When Reading the TDS

  • The values are typical data under specific test conditions and are not intended as limiting specifications, as the datasheet itself notes.
  • The datasheet does not list light transmittance, a numerical tensile modulus, surface roughness values, surface tension, or thickness tolerance.
  • Only two thicknesses are listed: 12 and 19 um.
  • Always test samples on your own line before placing a bulk order.
