Key Properties from the Datasheet
Each line below lists the values in this order of grades: 23 / 38 / 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 188 / 250 um. MD is the machine direction (the running direction of the film) and TD is the transverse direction.
- Tensile strength, MD, MPa: 215 / 225 / 225 / 215 / 215 / 205 / 196 / 196 (ASTM D882)
- Tensile strength, TD, MPa: 225 / 225 / 225 / 215 / 215 / 176 / 166 / 166 (ASTM D882)
- Elongation at break, MD, percent: 140 / 125 / 125 / 120 / 120 / 120 / 150 / 150 (ASTM D882)
- Elongation at break, TD, percent: 120 / 125 / 125 / 120 / 120 / 120 / 130 / 130 (ASTM D882)
- Thermal shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes, MD, percent: 1.1 / 1.4 / 1.4 / 1.3 / 1.3 / 1.2 / 1.0 / 1.0 (ASTM D1204)
- Thermal shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes, TD, percent: 0.2 / 0.2 / 0.4 / 0.2 / 0.2 / 0.2 / 0.8 / 0.8 (ASTM D1204)
- Optical density: 0.95 / 1.68 / 1.95 / 2.70 / 3.32 / 4.10 / above 4 / above 4 (JIS K7605)
What the Numbers Mean
Optical density. Optical density shows how much light the film blocks. A higher number means less light passes through. It rises steadily with thickness, from 0.95 at 23 um to 4.10 at 125 um, and the datasheet lists above 4 for the 188 and 250 um grades without an exact value. If your goal is to block light or hide what is behind the film, check this line first and pick the grade that meets your requirement.
Strength. Tensile strength shows how much pulling force the film withstands before it breaks. In MD it is about 215 to 225 MPa up to 100 um, then 205 MPa at 125 um and 196 MPa at 188 and 250 um. In TD it is 225 MPa for the 23 to 50 um grades, 215 MPa for 75 and 100 um, and lower for the thicker grades (176 MPa at 125 um and 166 MPa at 188 and 250 um). Note that MPa is force per unit area, so a thicker film can still carry more total load.
Stretch. Elongation at break shows how far the film stretches before breaking. MD ranges from 120 to 150 percent and TD from 120 to 130 percent, with the thickest grades stretching the most in MD.
Heat stability. After 30 minutes at 150°C, MD shrinkage is about 1.0 to 1.4 percent. TD shrinkage is low, 0.2 to 0.4 percent for the grades up to 125 um, and rises to 0.8 percent for the 188 and 250 um grades. Lower shrinkage means better dimensional stability, which matters in heat steps such as lamination, drying, or die cutting under heat.
Pigment distribution. The datasheet describes good pigment distribution. In a black film, even pigment distribution generally helps keep the color and light blocking uniform across the sheet (a general explanation, not from this datasheet).
Typical Applications
The datasheet lists wire insulation and cable tape, where the black color is used to distinguish lines, as well as drum head, decoration, adhesive tape, and die cut electrical insulation. The datasheet does not list electrical values such as breakdown voltage for this film, so if you need insulation data for a specific design, ask for it and test samples in your own application.
How to Read the Thickness Range
- If light blocking is your priority, look at the optical density line first. It increases with thickness.
- If you need low TD shrinkage under heat, the grades up to 125 um show 0.2 to 0.4 percent, while 188 and 250 um show 0.8 percent.
- If you need high tensile strength in both directions, the thinner grades up to 100 um show the highest figures.
- Compare grades of the same thickness only, since the values change from grade to grade.
Points to Keep in Mind When Reading the TDS
- The values are typical data under specific test conditions and are not intended as limiting specifications, as the datasheet itself notes.
- The datasheet does not list electrical properties, tensile modulus, surface resistivity, surface tension, or thickness tolerance.
- The exact optical density of the 188 and 250 um grades is not given, only that it is above 4.
- Always test samples on your own line before placing a bulk order.
