A Plain-English Reading of the Toray Lumirror T62 PET Film Datasheet: A High Transparent Film for Metallizing at 25, 50, and 75 Micron
This guide explains the Toray Lumirror T62 PET Film technical data sheet (TDS) in plain English, so buyers and engineers can read the figures with confidence.
What Is Toray Lumirror T62 PET Film?
Toray Lumirror T62 PET Film is a transparent polyester (PET) film from Toray’s Lumirror range. According to its datasheet, it is a high transparent film for metallizing, and it is described as a higher grade of Lumirror T60. It is offered in 25, 50, and 75 um, and the datasheet lists glossy metallized face label as its application.
Lumirror T62 at a Glance
- Type: high transparent film for metallizing (higher grade of T60)
- Available thickness: 25, 50, and 75 um
- Listed properties: controlled surface for metallizing, transparent, severe control for even distribution of static electricity on the film surface
- Listed application: glossy metallized face label
Key Properties from the Datasheet
Each line below lists the values in this order of grades: 25 / 50 / 75 um. MD is the machine direction (the running direction of the film) and TD is the transverse direction.
- Tensile strength, MD, MPa: 225 / 215 / 215 (ASTM D882)
- Tensile strength, TD, MPa: 245 / 225 / 225 (ASTM D882)
- Elongation at break, MD, percent: 170 / 150 / 150 (ASTM D882)
- Elongation at break, TD, percent: 160 / 130 / 130 (ASTM D882)
- Thermal shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes, MD, percent: 1.3 / 1.2 / 1.2 (ASTM D1204)
- Thermal shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes, TD, percent: 0.0 / 0.2 / 0.3 (ASTM D1204)
- Haze, percent: 0.6 / 0.8 / 0.9 (ASTM D1003)
What the Numbers Mean
Haze. Haze measures how much of the light passing through the film is scattered. A lower number means a clearer film. The datasheet lists 0.6 to 0.9 percent, which is very low, and it rises slightly with thickness. A clear base matters for metallizing, because the metal layer is applied to the film and any cloudiness in the base can affect the final look (a general explanation, not from this datasheet).
Controlled surface for metallizing. The datasheet lists a controlled surface for metallizing as a key property. Metallizing means applying a very thin metal layer, usually aluminum, onto the film surface (a general explanation). The datasheet does not give surface roughness or surface tension values, so if your metallizing process is sensitive to the surface, ask for that data and test samples.
Static electricity control. The datasheet says the distribution of static electricity on the film surface is tightly controlled so that it is even. No numerical figure, such as surface resistivity, is given in the datasheet.
Strength. Tensile strength shows how much pulling force the film withstands before it breaks. The 25 um grade is the strongest at 225 MPa in MD and 245 MPa in TD, and the 50 and 75 um grades list 215 MPa in MD and 225 MPa in TD. Strength is higher in TD than in MD for all three grades.
Stretch. Elongation at break shows how far the film stretches before it breaks. MD is 150 to 170 percent and TD is 130 to 160 percent.
Heat stability. After 30 minutes at 150°C, MD shrinkage is 1.2 to 1.3 percent, and TD shrinkage is very low, from 0.0 percent at 25 um to 0.3 percent at 75 um. Lower shrinkage means better dimensional stability, which matters in metallizing, coating, and other heat steps.
Higher grade of T60. The datasheet describes T62 as a higher grade of T60. It does not list which figures differ, so for a detailed comparison, read both datasheets at the same thickness.
Typical Application: Glossy Metallized Face Label
The datasheet lists glossy metallized face label as the application. A face label is the printed top layer of a label, and a clear film that is metallized gives a shiny, metal-like look (a general explanation, not from this datasheet). Suitability depends on your own metallizing and converting process, so test samples first.
How to Read the Thickness Range
- If clarity is your priority, compare the haze line. All three grades are low, and the 25 um grade is the lowest at 0.6 percent.
- If you need low TD shrinkage under heat, the 25 um grade shows 0.0 percent.
- If strength matters most, the 25 um grade shows the highest tensile figures.
- Compare grades of the same thickness only, since the values change from grade to grade.
Points to Keep in Mind When Reading the TDS
- The values are typical data under specific test conditions and are not intended as limiting specifications, as the datasheet itself notes.
- The datasheet does not list light transmittance, tensile modulus, surface roughness, surface tension, surface resistivity, or thickness tolerance.
- Only three thicknesses are listed: 25, 50, and 75 um.
- Always test samples on your own line before placing a bulk order.
