Key Properties from the Datasheet

Each line below lists the values in this order of grades: 25 / 38 / 50 / 75 / 100 / 125 / 188 / 250 um. MD is the machine direction (the running direction of the film) and TD is the transverse direction.

  • Tensile strength, MD, MPa: 225 / 225 / 215 / 215 / 210 / 205 / 186 / 176 (ASTM D882)
  • Tensile strength, TD, MPa: 245 / 245 / 225 / 225 / 220 / 215 / 196 / 186 (ASTM D882)
  • Elongation at break, MD, percent: 170 / 140 / 150 / 150 / 150 / 150 / 190 / 190 (ASTM D882)
  • Elongation at break, TD, percent: 160 / 130 / 130 / 130 / 130 / 140 / 140 / 150 (ASTM D882)
  • Thermal shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes, MD, percent: 1.3 / 1.3 / 1.2 / 1.2 / 1.0 / 0.9 / 0.9 / 0.9 (ASTM D1204)
  • Thermal shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes, TD, percent: 0.0 / 0.4 / 0.3 / 0.3 / 0.2 / 0.3 / 0.5 / 0.6 (ASTM D1204)
  • Haze, percent: about 0.6 for the thinnest grades, rising to about 3.0 at 250 um (ASTM D1003)
  • Light transmittance at 550 nm, percent: about 87 for the thinnest grades, falling to about 84 at 250 um (ASTM D1003)

What the Numbers Mean

Haze. Haze measures how much of the light passing through the film is scattered. A lower number means a clearer, less cloudy film. The datasheet lists values from about 0.6 to about 3.0 percent, and the figure rises as the film gets thicker, which is common because thicker film scatters more light (a general explanation, not from this datasheet).

Light transmittance. This is the share of light that passes through the film at a wavelength of 550 nm, which is in the middle of the visible range. The datasheet lists roughly 84 to 87 percent depending on thickness, with the thinner grades at the higher end. Higher means more light gets through.

Strength. Tensile strength shows how much pulling force the film withstands before it breaks. It is highest in the thinner grades, about 225 MPa in MD and 245 MPa in TD, and falls for the thick grades to 176 MPa in MD and 186 MPa in TD at 250 um. Note that MPa is force per unit area, so a thicker film can still carry more total load.

Stretch. Elongation at break shows how far the film stretches before it breaks. MD ranges from 140 to 190 percent and TD from 130 to 160 percent depending on the grade.

Heat stability. After 30 minutes at 150°C, MD shrinkage is about 0.9 to 1.3 percent and TD shrinkage is about 0.0 to 0.6 percent. Lower shrinkage means better dimensional stability, which matters in printing, coating, laminating, and other heat steps. MD shrinkage is larger than TD for most grades.

Flat face. The datasheet lists a flat face as a property, which fits applications such as graphic arts layout and releasing to make a flat surface. It does not give surface roughness values, so if flatness is critical, ask for that data and check samples.

Thermal rating. The datasheet lists a UL746B relative thermal index (RTI) of 105°C for both electrical and mechanical properties. RTI is a UL rating related to the temperature a material can withstand in long-term use. For a specific end product, please confirm the current UL listing.

Typical Applications

The datasheet says Lumirror T60 suits all applications that require high transparency of PET film. The examples it gives are the base of graphic arts layout, releasing to make a flat face, membrane switch, label, and OHP sheet. Suitability always depends on your own process, so test samples first.

How to Read the Thickness Range

  • If clarity is your priority, compare the haze and light transmittance for the thickness you need, since haze rises with thickness.
  • If strength matters most, the thinner grades show the highest tensile figures.
  • If you need low shrinkage in MD, the 125, 188, and 250 um grades show about 0.9 percent.
  • Compare grades of the same thickness only, since the values change from grade to grade.

Points to Keep in Mind When Reading the TDS

  • The values are typical data under specific test conditions and are not intended as limiting specifications, as the datasheet itself notes.
  • Haze and light transmittance are summarized as approximate ranges here. Please check the official datasheet for the exact figure at your thickness.
  • The datasheet does not list tensile modulus, surface roughness, surface tension, electrical values, or thickness tolerance.
  • Always test samples on your own line before placing a bulk order.
