Toray Lumirror U94 PET Film vs T60 and U60: Three Clear Films Compared

Toray Lumirror U94 PET Film is a super clear, pretreated polyester film at 75, 100, and 125 micron, treated on both sides for adhesion and anti-static performance

Three transparent films in this range look similar on a spec sheet, and they are not interchangeable. Toray Lumirror U94 PET Film is the one with the highest light transmission, a treatment on both sides, and an anti-static claim.

How the Three Clear Films Compare

  • Toray Lumirror T60 PET Film: 25 to 250 um, light transmittance of roughly 84 to 87 percent, haze of about 0.6 to 3.0 percent, untreated flat face, listed for graphic arts, membrane switches, and labels.
  • Toray Lumirror U60 PET Film: 12 and 23 um, light transmission of about 89 percent, co-extruded for controlled optics, listed for window film.
  • U94: 75, 100, and 125 um, light transmission of about 93 percent, low haze, treated on both sides, listed for labels and OHP sheets.

The 93 percent figure is the headline. It is a few points above the others in the datasheets, and for projection sheets and clear labels that margin is visible.

What “Pretreated, Both Sides” Means

The datasheet describes U94 as a super clear polyester film pretreated for good adhesion and anti-static properties, with both sides treated. In general, a pretreatment is a surface coating or treatment that helps inks, adhesives, and coatings bond to polyester, which otherwise resists them (a general explanation, not from this datasheet). Treatment on both sides means ink can go on one face and adhesive or coating on the other.

The datasheet does not give a surface tension or adhesion test value, so it cannot tell you how well a specific ink will bond. Run your own adhesion test.

The Numbers the Datasheet Gives

  • Thickness: 75, 100, and 125 um
  • Light transmission at 550 nm: about 93 percent (ASTM D1003)
  • Haze: under about 1 percent for the thinner grade, rising to about 3 percent in the thickest (ASTM D1003)
  • Tensile strength: about 205 to 225 MPa (ASTM D882)
  • Elongation at break: about 130 to 150 percent (ASTM D882)
  • Heat shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes: about 0.3 to 0.9 percent (ASTM D1204)
  • Coefficient of friction: about 0.63 to 0.66 static and about 0.45 dynamic (ASTM D1894)

Haze measures how much light is scattered, and a lower number means a clearer film. It tends to rise with thickness, so compare haze at the same thickness. Note that MPa is force per unit area, so a thicker film can still carry more total load.

Where It Is Used

The datasheet lists label and OHP sheet. OHP is overhead projector sheet, where clarity and a surface that accepts toner or ink both matter. For labels, a clear film with a treated face is the starting point for a “no-label” look. The datasheet does not describe the exact role of the film in either product, so test samples first.

What the Datasheet Does Not Say

  • The values are typical data under specific test conditions and are not limiting specifications, as the datasheet itself notes.
  • No surface resistivity number is given, so the anti-static claim is a description, not a measured value. No surface tension, gloss, or thickness tolerance is listed.
  • Several values here are ranges because the text available did not show which belong to which thickness. Please check the official datasheet for exact values.
