Toray Lumirror T70A PET Film is a high transparent polyester film with good handling, offered in just two thicknesses, 16 and 25 micron, and meant to be colored or metalized
Sixteen micron or twenty-five? Toray Lumirror T70A PET Film comes down to exactly that choice, and the datasheet gives enough numbers to see what changes between the two.
What the Datasheet Promises
According to its datasheet, T70A is a high transparent polyester film with good handling properties. Its listed properties are high transparency and slight roughness for good handling. The listed applications are label and window film, with the note that the window film is to be colored or metalized, which means this film is a base for further processing rather than a finished product.
The Numbers the Datasheet Gives
- Thickness: 16 um and 25 um
- Tensile strength in MD: about 280 MPa at 16 um and 240 MPa at 25 um (ASTM D882)
- Tensile strength in TD: about 220 MPa at 16 um and 210 MPa at 25 um (ASTM D882)
- F-5 value in MD: about 105 MPa at 16 um and 95 MPa at 25 um (ASTM D882)
- Young’s modulus in MD: about 4.6 GPa at 16 um and 4.5 GPa at 25 um (ASTM D882)
- Heat shrinkage at 150°C for 30 minutes: about 0.2 percent in TD for both (ASTM D1204)
- Coefficient of friction: about 0.65 static and 0.45 dynamic at 16 um, and about 0.55 and 0.38 at 25 um (ASTM D1894)
- Haze: listed, but the values are not clear in the text available here (ASTM D1003)
What Changes Between 16 and 25 Micron
Strength. The thinner grade is the stronger one on paper, about 280 versus 240 MPa in MD. MPa is force per unit area, so the 25 um film still carries more total load, but the 16 um film is the more tensioned and stretch-resistant per unit of section, which helps when it runs through coating or metallizing lines. The F-5 value is generally the stress needed to stretch the film by 5 percent (a general explanation, not from this datasheet), and the 16 um grade shows the higher figure.
Stiffness. The two grades are very close, about 4.5 to 4.6 GPa.
Friction. The 25 um grade has lower friction values, which in general means a slipperier surface. That can help winding, but a surface that is too slippery can also slide on rollers, so the right level depends on your machine (a general explanation).
Heat. TD shrinkage is the same at about 0.2 percent for both, which is very low.
In practice, 16 um is the choice when you want the thinnest, strongest film and a lighter finished product, while 25 um gives a little more body and a smoother-running surface.
Where It Is Used
The datasheet lists label and window film to be colored or metalized. A very clear base lets the dye or metal layer define the look of the finished product. The datasheet does not describe the exact process or the role of the film, so test samples first.
How It Differs from Neighboring Grades
- Toray Lumirror U60 PET Film is also a window film base, but it is co-extruded for controlled optics at 12 and 23 um, and its datasheet describes dyeing and metallizing qualification at customers. T70A is a simpler, high transparent film with a similar purpose.
- Toray Lumirror U94 PET Film is a super clear film at 75 to 125 um, treated on both sides for labels and OHP, much thicker than T70A.
- Toray Lumirror T60 PET Film is the general high transparent film from 25 to 250 um. T70A reaches thinner, 16 um, and adds a F-5 value and Young’s modulus on its datasheet, which T60 does not list.
What the Datasheet Does Not Say
- The values are typical data under specific test conditions and are not limiting specifications, as the datasheet itself notes.
- Haze and some other figures are not clear in the text available. No light transmittance, surface tension, or thickness tolerance is listed.
- MD shrinkage and some TD values are not shown clearly. Some numbers are approximate. Please check the official datasheet for exact values.
