Toray Lumirror P51 PET Film is a 12 micron, pretreated polyester film built for ink adhesion, and the P60 datasheet itself recommends it for more critical printing
Pick up the P60 datasheet and one line stands out: for more critical applications, Lumirror P51 is recommended. Toray Lumirror P51 PET Film is that step up, a biaxially oriented polyester film with a special treatment for excellent adhesion with print ink.
Why a Printing Film Needs a Coating, Not Only Corona
According to its datasheet, P51 is a pretreated film made for printing. It adheres well even to special inks, such as inks with high-density pigments, and also to normal inks like those for cellophane and standard ink. It lists excellent clarity and gloss, and an appropriate slip for handling in printing and after-print treatment. The listed applications are packaging of noodles, frozen food, sweets, and similar products.
One detail is easy to miss. The datasheet says there is less possibility of re-electrification problems from friction and peeling, because the coated side is not corona treated. In general, corona treatment can leave a surface prone to holding static, while a coated surface can avoid that (a general explanation, not from this datasheet).
The Numbers the Datasheet Gives
- Thickness: 12 um
- Tensile strength: about 230 to 250 MPa depending on direction (ASTM D882)
- Young’s modulus: about 4.6 GPa in MD and 4.9 GPa in TD (ASTM D882)
- Coefficient of friction: about 0.50 and 0.45 on the inside, 0.45 and 0.40 on the outside (ASTM D1894)
- Haze, shrinkage at 150°C, and wetting tension are listed, but the values are not clear in the text available here
The Young’s modulus of roughly 4.6 to 4.9 GPa is a stiffness figure, and it is the same pair of values the P52 datasheet shows for its 12 um grade. Note that MPa is force per unit area, so at 12 um the total load the film carries is small, and tension control matters.
Food Contact
The datasheet states that P51 is composed only of substances accepted by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and conforms to specifications for materials intended for contact with foodstuffs. Regulations differ by market and by the final packaging structure, so confirm what applies to your product with your supplier and compliance team.
How It Differs from Neighboring Grades
- Toray Lumirror P60 PET Film is the standard packaging film, one side corona treated, in 12 and 16 um. It prints well with inks formulated for plain polyester, and its own datasheet points to P51 for more critical applications.
- Toray Lumirror P52 PET Film shares P51’s 12 um thickness and strength, but is pretreated for metallizing rather than printing, and its datasheet does not guarantee food contact.
What the Datasheet Does Not Say
- The values are typical data under specific test conditions and are not limiting specifications, as the datasheet itself notes.
- Haze, shrinkage, and wetting tension values are not clear in the text available. No gloss or thickness tolerance is listed.
- No ink adhesion test results are given, only the description.
- Only one thickness is offered. Some numbers are approximate. Please check the official datasheet for exact values.
