Release Film vs. Peel Ply: What is the Difference in Composites?

Understanding Their Distinct Roles in Surface Preparation and Demolding for Vacuum Bagging

Product Overview

In vacuum bagging and composite manufacturing, selecting the right consumables directly impacts the structural integrity and surface finish of the final part. A common point of confusion among engineers is the difference between Release Film and Peel Ply. While both are used during the curing process, they serve entirely different functions. Understanding their distinct roles is key to achieving the desired surface preparation for your carbon fiber or fiberglass projects.

What is Release Film?

Release Film (typically made from PET or PE with a silicone coating) is used to prevent the resin from bonding to the mold or the vacuum bag.

  • It leaves a smooth, glossy surface on the cured composite.
  • It is strictly a barrier layer that allows air and excess resin to pass through (if perforated) while keeping the part clean.

What is Peel Ply?

Peel Ply (typically a woven nylon or polyester fabric) serves a completely different purpose.

  • It creates a textured, matte surface on the cured composite when peeled away.
  • It acts as a “sacrificial layer” that absorbs excess resin (resin bleed).
  • Crucially, the textured finish it leaves behind is chemically active and mechanically rough, making it perfectly prepped for secondary bonding or painting without the need for heavy sanding.

Key Differences

  • Surface Finish: Release Film leaves a glossy finish. Peel Ply leaves a matte, textured finish.
  • Function: Release film provides demolding. Peel ply provides bonding preparation.
  • Usage: They are often used together. The Peel Ply goes directly against the composite, and the Release Film goes on top of it to protect the vacuum bag.
