Understanding How PET Film Thickness Affects Breakdown Voltage, Thermal Stability, and Electrical Insulation Performance
Product Overview
PET Insulation Film is a biaxially oriented polyester film widely used in electrical and electronic applications for its reliable dielectric strength, stable dimensions, and good mechanical properties. Because it is available in a wide range of thicknesses, from thin 12μm films to heavy 0.35mm gauges, PET insulation film can be matched to different voltage classes and processing requirements.
This guide explains how thickness influences insulation performance and how to choose the right PET film for your application.

How Thickness Affects Insulation Performance
Thinner PET films, such as 12μm to 50μm, are often used where space is limited and moderate insulation is sufficient. Medium gauges, around 75μm to 125μm, balance insulation strength with flexibility and are common in transformers, motors, and flexible circuits. Thicker films, around 0.188mm to 0.35mm, provide higher breakdown voltage and are used in heavy-duty insulation, high-voltage applications, and demanding industrial environments.
Applications
PET Insulation Film is widely used in electrical insulation such as flyback transformers (FBT), choke coils, wire insulation, and cable tape. It is also used in flexible printed circuits (FPC), membrane switches, die cut insulation parts, mold release, adhesive tape, and spiral tubes.
